Camping: For all of the following listings you may assume that eating or patronizing your host in some way is appreciated and in some cases expected while “free camping”. All information is accurate as of the date we visited. With many of the sites your own ability to negotiate or interact may affect what services are made available to you and at what price. We have converted prices from local currency to US dollars at the exchange rate in effect at the time of use. The amount shown is the amount that we paid per night for two people. Although rare you may encounter additional fees if you are traveling with multiple people.

This was easily one of the most undesirable places we camped on our entire trip. We have removed our grey tank (to make room for additional Propane storage) and one of the campers expressed his disgust meanwhile all of the “fulltimers” dig three foot holes to bury their “shit hose” and call it a septic system. The beach is considered hazardous swimming since all of the campers here allow their tanks to leech into the sea. We also were made to feel very unwelcome. There seems to be equal numbers of French Canadians and English Canadians/Americans. The two groups occupy opposite sides of the center drive and do not speak to each other. We found both groups to be petty, unappealing people. We only stayed for two nights because we befriended the only Mexican family (camping under a tree) and were invited to fish the following day and join them to celebrate Amy’s birthday the following night. Not only were we pleased at the invitation but we took it as an opportunity to disturb (with our merriment) the pompous campers in the area. Our friendship with the locals is the reason, we believe, that we were never asked for the 30 Peso nightly fee.

This was one of our best experiences! As you pull off of the Mex 200 stay to the left and you will get onto a deserted landing strip. At the end of the strip is a large area to camp in front of a military installation and next to a turtle sanctuary. When we were there the turtles were nesting every night and on several occasions we were invited to help release baby turtles back into the sea.

This is a small village about one and a half hours from Oaxaca on Highway 175 East towards Tuxtepec. We stopped here since our brakes had literally caught on fire. David, the mechanic, rebuilt the entire break system and had us finished by the end of the evening. I suspect that if you needed to pull in for the night David would be accommodating. While headed east make a left at the Pemex and turn left into the parking lot. Unfortunately I neglected to get GPS coordinates, but it should be difficult to miss.

This was a lovely spot on the river. San Mateo Yetla is about 4KM before Valle Nacional on the 175 headed east. As you come out of the hills you will see the river on your left. The first obvious sign of San Mateo Yetla is the cemetery on the left on the road. Make your first left onto the paved road and look just past the cemetery before the road veers to the right. You will see an access road to the river. This spot is only large enough for one rig and probably nothing bigger than a 24-27’.

This was a great restaurant before reaching Palenque on highway 199. The food was excellent and reasonably priced. They have a large pond that is stocked with fish, which they will prepare “al gusto” (to your liking). They had water, shower, and bathrooms, but no dump. The Tortuga is being developed by the owner and will eventually have Bungalows for rent. The owner said he would always welcome our friends so this is a good option for a free overnight.

If going to Uxmal we highly recommend this option. The parking lot at Uxmal wanted ten or fifteen dollars extra to spend the night and the “RV park” down the street was pathetic at best with some of the worst tasting, most expensive food we have had in Mexico. We only moved to the “RV” park because as we were leaving the ruins we saw Jim and Sherrol & Rob, Jane, and Taylor.

We only paid $4.00 per day this time around as the property has fallen apart. There is no electricity (haven’t paid the bill in three months) so there is no water either (no pump) and so they drained the pool as well. They also had not cut the grass in a very long time.
